Posture is very important both at home and on the job. Back-friendly posture is a valuable component of preventing or managing back pain while performing any activity. Incorrect posture while standing for long periods of time, sitting in an office chair, and driving are all common causes of back pain.

Ergonomic Seating Guidelines

A proper chair is probably the most important element when designing an ergonomic work space. Like a solid foundation, the chair provides a solid base to build good posture and body mechanics.  A good chair adequately supports the back, legs, buttocks and arms and prevents awkward posture and  exaggerated stresses.

Guidelines for proper fit:

• Backrest should be in alignment with natural curve of the lower back.
• Feet should be flat on the floor, with the hips and knees at right angles to each other.
• The arm rests of the chair should be soft enough to allow some cushioning for the arms and to allow the shoulders to relax and keep elbows close to the body.
• The chair should have a 5-point base to provide sufficient stability and ease of rolling across the floor.
